Respiration In Organisms – Heart Beats Faster During Exercise Or while Running
Q. WHEN YOU RUN, YOUR BREATHING BECOMES FASTER AS YOU NEED MORE OXYGEN. BUT WHY DOES YOUR RATE OF HEARTBEAT ALSO INCREASE?
When you run, your oxygen intake increases because you require a constant supply of it in order to produce more energy. Hence to meet this requirement, your heart also begins to beat faster which leads to a faster pulse. Breathing thus becomes harder since our lungs need to take in more fresh air.
In addition to our lungs, our muscles also burn energy during running. In fact during a run, our muscles require up to three times more Oxygen as compared to the time when they are resting. Hence for our muscles to stay energetic, blood must circulate through them.
This pumping of the blood is done by the heart, which in turn causes the heartbeat to increase.
Conclusion: Hence, Running causes the heart rate to rise because the muscles require more oxygen-rich blood because they are working harder than while walking. The heart beats faster so that the heart supplies more oxygenated blood and nutrients to the body muscles.
