We encounter various types of lever in our everyday lives: opening a drink with a bottle opener, cutting paper with scissors, taking the lid off a paint pot using a screwdriver, and – the simplest of all – playing on a seesaw in the park. Yet, the principle of levers is sometimes so natural to us that we do not pay any attention to how it actually works.

ere are four basic elements to consider when using a lever:

Pivot – the point around which something turns

Beam – a wooden plank or solid rod that rests on the pivot

Load – the item or object being moved or lifted on the beam

Force – the effort or input needed to move the beam and the load

Levers are a simple machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge, or fulcrum. A lever is a rigid body capable of rotating on a point on itself. On the basis of the locations of fulcrum, load and effort, the lever is divided into three types. Also, leverage is mechanical advantage gained in a system. It is one of the six simple machines identified by Renaissance scientists.

A lever amplifies an input force to provide a greater output force, which is said to provide leverage. The ratio of the output force to the input force is the mechanical advantage of the lever. As such, the lever is a mechanical advantage device, trading off force against movement. The formula for mechanical advantage of a lever is effort.

A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that use mechanical advantage (also called leverage) to multiply force. Usually the term refers to the six classical simple machines that were defined by Renaissance scientists:

From pre-historic times, man keeps finding ways that will help him simplify his life. As a cave man and a hunter, humans discovered fire and ways to ‘create’ fire. Fire helped him be safe from predators and improved the taste of food that he could now cook. As a nomad, man realized that rotating friction is less compared to sliding friction. A wheel was invented.

Simple Machines are various tools and techniques that make human life easy. Pulleys, levers and hammer are examples of some simple machines. Most of the complex machines are composed of many simple machines put together. Can you think of how many simple machines are used in making a car or an airplane?

& the list goes on and on!

Go to a manufacturing plant, research lab or an amusement park – we are always surrounded by a lot of equipment that are all made up of a large number of simple machines.

Hollywood movies project that machines might overtake humans one day. With the advent of “intelligent machines” this might no more be just fiction.

However, whatever the future may hold, it is fascinating to see how simple concepts that we study in our middle school shape up to make such complex systems.
The post Simple Machines first appeared on Learn Science, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
